It’s no secret that inspiration can be one of the most difficult things to acquire, regardless of if you’ve been taking photos for a while or are just starting out.
Luckily, there are plenty of websites and services out there that can make it easy to find photography inspiration. Whether you have something particular in mind or are just seeing what’s out there, there are plenty of great places to look. Here are six of the best.
First up on this list, we have Particulr. Particulr is a great little website that is super accessible and easy to get into, with tons of photography inspiration available to you.
At its core, Particulr is just a blog. It’s run by Jenna Garrett, who is a photo editor, writer, and visual artist currently working for Airbnb. This ought to give you some confidence in the type of content you’ll find here.
The blog itself is just a series of photos from a wide range of sources. The name of the photo, the artist who took it, and a link to their website or blog are all included here.
What makes Particulr great is how easy it is to discover new photographers whose style you like with this blog. Since all it takes is a click to get to their website, this is a phenomenal resource to find more content that you like, which makes it a great stepping-off point.
Next up, we have something a little more specific. Alex Coghe is an Italian photojournalist currently based in Mexico. Their focus is on street photography, with an emphasis on documenting the human condition.
If you’ve never looked into any street photography or the like, then this could be a pretty significant change from what you normally view. As far as inspiration is concerned, this can be a phenomenal way to branch out and experience an entirely new variety of photography.
Even if you are familiar, the environments and people that Alex photographs will almost certainly be enough to give you a few ideas on what you can give a try for yourself.
If you’re looking for something a little different, then Exposure might be worth giving a look at. Exposure is not just a way for you to find inspiration for your own photography, but also a tool you can use to showcase what you’ve done.
The idea behind Exposure is to create a unique publishing platform for visual storytelling. You can include text to help convey an idea, though it’s hardly necessary, with your images doing the bulk of the talking.
What’s great about Exposure is that you can easily find other stories told using this web service to get inspiration. There’s a ton of variety here from a whole host of different people and cultures, all using the service to their advantage.
If you decide to sign up and make your own Exposure stories, you’ll receive a website landing page that you can use to easily share with others as well, making Exposure a great way to rethink how you take photos.
Next up on this list is ViewBug. If you’re looking for something that’s closer to a social media platform for photographers, then ViewBug might just scratch that itch for you.
There are a lot of different ways to use ViewBug and a lot that you can get out of it as a result. Perhaps the simplest and most important of these is the Explore Photos section, which allows you to see what others have uploaded through a variety of different categories.
If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, you can sort by editor’s choice, or by trending images, which are a collection of images based on how people have liked and shared them.
You can sort by categories as well, and there are a lot of them. Whether you’re searching for something abstract, natural, or something in between, there’s a ton of variety here to look through.
There’s more to do with ViewBug as well. There are ways to find new photographers to look into, official contests that you can enter, and even an in-built blog full of tips and tricks. Perfect for if you’re looking for skill-building photography exercises that really work.
If you have an interest in beauty photography, then this website is a phenomenal place to look for inspiration. Lindsay Adler is an award-winning photographer and director that specializes in beauty and fashion photography.
The content itself is rarely updated, but there’s a lot here that you can look through to get some ideas. Lindsay has eight different portfolios that you can look through on a variety of different aspects of beauty and fashion, as well as cinemagraphs and motion pictures that you can look to for inspiration.
Even if fashion and beauty photography isn’t an area that interests you, it won’t hurt to branch out and try something new. Creative photoshoot ideas you can do at home may not be something you end up using in your own portfolio, but they can change how you think about your photography all the same.
Finally, we have Photocrowd. If you’re looking for a wide variety of constantly changing photography, then Photocrowd is a great place to look.
Photocrowd is, at its core, a photography contest site. There is a wide range of different photography contests available on the site that you can enter, and the better you do in them awards you points.
You can see other artists who have earned a large number of points on the leaderboards, and look through their portfolios. You can also look at and even judge competitions for yourself.
You don’t have to participate to find yourself inspired here, though doing so might just help you to take some photos that you otherwise never would have.
If you’re still new to photography, now is the best time to make yourself familiar with the most important photography terms.
